Alaska: Meaning and History

Embroidered flag patch — Alaska

History of the flag

Adopted in 1927, the Alaskan flag was designed for a competition by Benny Benson, a young student of Aleut origin.

Its design reflects the grandeur of the landscape, the local culture and Alaska's belonging to the United States.

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • The seven stars embody the Big Dipper constellation. They symbolize strength and serve as a point of orientation.

  • The lone star represents the pole star (Ursa Major) and the connection to the United States.

  • The midnight-blue background evokes the night sky and vast Alaskan landscapes.
