History of the flag

Adopted in 1975, the colours and structure of the flag are those of the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA), the main armed opposition movement to Portuguese colonisation.

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • The star, a symbol of unity, is accompanied by a cogwheel (industry) and crossed by a machete (struggle and agriculture).

  • Yellow embodies the country's wealth.

  • Represents the blood shed for the independence and defence of the country.

  • Black represents the African continent.
