Atacama Flag: Meaning and History

Embroidered flag patch — Atacama

History of the flag

The flag of Chile's Atacama region was used by insurgents during the 1859 liberal revolt led by Pedro León Gallo.

It was formalized in 1996 as a symbol of pride and heritage for the region.

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • The gold star reflects a secular, progressive ideology. For some, the star evokes the passage of comet Donati in 1858.

  • Blue embodies the liberal revolution of 1859.
