Austria Flag: Meaning and History

History of the flag
As early as 1230, white and red appeared on the seal of Frederick II, the last Duke of Austria from the House of Babenberg.
The current banner was officially adopted in 1919, at the birth of the Republic of Austria.
What do the elements of the flag mean?
According to legend, the Austrian flag originates from Duke Leopold V. In 1191, after a heroic battle against the Moors, his white tunic was stained with blood everywhere except the central part protected by his belt.
