History of the flag

The Auvergnat flag has its origins in the coat of arms of Auvergne, the Gonfanon, which appeared in medieval times.

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • This coat of arms was on the banner of Eustache III, Count of Auvergne, during the conquest of Jerusalem in 1099. The red symbolizes the courage and blood shed by the Auvergnats in defence of their land. The yellow background represents the fields and agricultural prosperity of the region.
