History of the flag

The Balearic flag was adopted in 1983, when the Balearic Islands were recognized as an autonomous part of Spain.

It is inspired by the Catalan flag with a white castle, reflecting the Catalan identity of the islands and their link with the Crown.

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • Represents the Spanish royal power.

  • Purple represents Mallorca, the archipelago's capital.

  • Together, red and yellow have been the traditional Spanish colors since the VIIIth century and the kingdom of Aragon.
