British Columbia Flag: Meaning and History

Embroidered flag patch — British Columbia

History of the flag

Founded in 1871, this Canadian province officially adopted its flag in 1960.

Initially, the sun was placed above the Union Jack, but this didn't sit well : it can't be above the British Empire.

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • The Union Jack represents the province's British origins.

  • The crown is a reminder of loyalty to the monarchy.

  • Refers to the territory's position at the western tip of Canada, where the sun sets.

  • The waves symbolize the Pacific Ocean.
