Brittany: Meaning and History

History of the flag
The Gwenn-Ha-Du (’ White and Black’ in Breton) is inspired by the flag of the United States and was created in the 1920s by Morvan Marchal, an architect, artist, poet and illustrator belonging to the Breton artistic movement ‘Seiz Breur’.
What do the elements of the flag mean?

A symbol of courage, nobility and purity. Ermines are generally eleven in number. Their number is not officially defined.
Representing Upper Brittany (Dol, Rennes, Nantes, St Malo and St Brieuc).
Representing Lower Brittany (Leon, Cornouaille, Trégor, Vannetais).
