History of the flag

The flag of the Canary Islands was adopted in 1982, after the archipelago obtained its status as an autonomous community of Spain.

Its color combination is derived from the flags of the maritime provinces of Tenerife and Las Palmas.

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • White is a symbol of peace, harmony and unity between the islands.

  • Yellow evokes the sun and the Mediterranean climate typical of the Canaries.

  • The blue represents the Atlantic Ocean that separates the islands.
