History of the flag
The Communist Party took over the reins of the country in 1949 and introduced a flag combining political ideology and tradition.
Traditionally, the 5 stars embody the five Chinese virtues : kindness, righteousness, propriety, wisdom and loyalty.
What do the elements of the flag mean?

The large star is the symbol of communism. The four smaller stars symbolise the social classes in China : - Aristocrats, - Peasants, - Craftsmen, - Merchants. Some also see it as a representation of the country's ethnic diversity.
Red is the traditional Chinese color and the color of revolution.
