Cyprus Flag: Meaning and History

Embroidered flag patch — Cyprus

History of the flag

Cyprus declared its independence in 1959, and its flag was officially adopted in 1960.

This banner aims to be as neutral as possible, without political or communal references.

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • The country’s map, in orange, echoes its nickname ‘the Copper Island,’ mined since Roman times and which gave its name to this famous metal.

  • The olive branches on a white background express the desire for peace between the Turks and Greeks, the island’s two historic communities.
