History of the flag

This island of the Lesser Antilles gained independence from Great Britain in 1978.

Its flag was designed by Alwin Bully, a native of Dominica and cultural advisor for the Caribbean to UNESCO.

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • The parrot is the national emblem and is surrounded by ten stars, representing each of the country’s constituencies. Red symbolizes socialism.

  • The green background echoes the lush forests.

  • Yellow represents the sun and the Caribbean people.

  • Black represents the land and african heritage.

  • White represents the rivers and waterfalls of Dominica.
