Earth Flag: Meaning and History

Embroidered flag patch — Earth

History of the flag

Proposed in 2015, the ‘International Flag of Planet Earth’ was born to represent the Earth as a single nation on future space missions.

The flag has also been considered for planting on Mars.

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • The Seven Intertwined Circles symbolize interconnected life, harmony between continents, global cooperation and the unity of humankind.

  • The dark blue background represents water, which covers most of the Earth, but also the universe.
