European Union Flag: Meaning and History

Embroidered flag patch — European Union

History of the flag

The flag of the European Union was adopted in 1955 by the Council of Europe, and made official in 1986.

Originally featuring fifteen stars, the number was reduced to twelve, to represent ‘movement in stability’.

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • The twelve golden stars embody solidarity and unity in diversity. They form a circle, symbolizing eternity and perfection.

  • Blue represents the sky, stability and the peace that unites all the peoples of Europe.
