History of the flag

This flag sums up the diverse heritage of Finistère, a land of ancient countries. Its imagery brings together the emblems of medieval Breton seigneuries.

This flag is sometimes used at local cultural festivals, in opposition to the administrative flag, to express pride in belonging.

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • The five black ermines are a tribute to Brittany, of which the ermine is one of the oldest symbols.

  • The yellow background with the black lion on the left represents Léon, the former powerful bishopric of north Finistère.

  • The blue background with the Cornouaille symbolizes endurance, rural roots and sacrifice.
