Gironde: Meaning and History

Embroidered flag patch — Gironde

History of the flag

The Gironde flag was adopted in 2003.

It is inspired by the ancient coat of arms of Bordeaux and Aquitaine, incorporating colors such as burgundy and blue.

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • The golden lion is a symbol of courage, power and nobility, inherited from Aquitaine and English heraldic tradition.

  • Evokes the blood shed for the Republic (reference to the Girondins), but also wine, the region's jewel.

  • The blue stripes illustrate the estuary and the power of the waters that irrigate the region.
