History of the flag

The flag is inspired by the flag of the United Provinces of Central America (1823–1839).

It is one of the few flags in the world to feature firearms, along with those of Mozambique, Haiti, and Bolivia.

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • The quetzal, a symbol of freedom, stands on a scroll bearing the date of independence. The weapons and olive branches represent peace, defense, and honor.

  • The blue stripes refer to the oceans bordering Guatemala.

  • Represents purity, justice, and peace.
