History of the flag

This flag was adopted in 1997 when Hong Kong was retroceded to China, after 100 years of British rule.

The country's banner is a visual representation of Hong Kong's identity : ‘One country, two systems’.

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • The Bauhinia flower has been the emblem of Hong Kong since the 1960s. The stars symbolise the five principles of the Chinese Communist Party.

  • The traditional color of the link with China.

  • Symbolises democracy, freedom and justice.
