History of the flag

Indonesia proclaimed its independence in 1945, when its flag became official.

The red and white colors come from a XIIIth century banner drawn during the reign of the rulers of the kingdom of Majapahit (East Java).

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • Red symbolises the courage, strength and self-sacrifice of the Indonesian people.

  • White is the color of honesty, purity and peace.
