History of the flag

The Italian maritime flag dates back to 1947, shortly after the birth of the Italian Republic (1946).

It differs from the national flag in that it features the coat of arms depicting the ancient maritime republics (Venice, Genoa, Pisa, Amalfi) and the naval crown.
