There are many interpretations and legends surrounding the Japanese flag. Red is the mirror of Shinto ethics, which are based on a pure and just heart.

History of the flag

‘Hinomaru' is the name of the Japanese flag, a translation of ‘solar disc’, representing the Shinto sun goddess Amaterasu.

It is said to have been created in the XVIIIth century, and according to legend a monk brought it to the shogun to face the Mongol invasions.

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • The red disc also refers to the color of the rising sun, from which Japan takes its name : ‘Land of the Rising Sun’.

  • White symbolizes purity and honesty.
