History of the flag
‘Hinomaru' is the name of the Japanese flag, a translation of ‘solar disc’, representing the Shinto sun goddess Amaterasu.
It is said to have been created in the XVIIIth century, and according to legend a monk brought it to the shogun to face the Mongol invasions.
What do the elements of the flag mean?

The red disc also refers to the color of the rising sun, from which Japan takes its name : ‘Land of the Rising Sun’.
White symbolizes purity and honesty.
