History of the flag

The jordanian flag, designed by Hussein Ben Ali in 1921, was adorned with a star in 1928 and became the country's official banner.

It bears the colors of the Arab rebellion against the Turks in 1916, carried by the famous Lawrence of Arabia, among others.

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • The seven branches illustrate the seven verses of the Fatiha, the first sura of the Koran.

  • Embodies the Hashemite house of Mohammed.

  • Symbolizes Islam and the Fatimid dynasty.

  • The white represents the Umayyad lineage.
