History of the flag

Kosovo's flag was adopted in 2008 when it unilaterally declared independence.

Along with Cyprus, Kosovo is the only state with a geographical representation of the country on its flag.

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • The six white stars represent Kosovo's six ethnic groups : Albanians, Serbs, Turks, Bosnians, Gorans and Roma.

  • The golden map represents the territory of Kosovo, asserting its sovereignty.

  • The blue background evokes European values and stability.
