History of the flag

Adopted in 1992 following Kyrgyzstan's independence, it pays tribute to nomadic traditions and its legendary leader, Manas the Noble.

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • A stylised representation of the ceiling of a traditional kyrgyz yurt sits at the centre of a sun, its 40 rays representing as many kyrgyz tribes.

  • Yellow embodies sunshine and wealth.

  • Red is the color of Manas, guide and unifier of the kyrgyz tribes.
