History of the flag

In 1936, on the eve of the Berlin Olympic Games, Haiti and Liechtenstein had the same flag, so a crown was added to differentiate them.

It was officially adopted in 1937.

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • The ermine-lined gold crown is the symbol of the Liechtenstein princely dynasty. The design was slightly modified in 1982.

  • Blue and red are the colors of the livery worn in the XVIIIth century by officers and representatives of the royal house of Liechtenstein.
