History of the flag

Nicknamed the ‘Capital of Flanders’, Lille and the surrounding area belong to the historic region of Romanesque Flanders.

Often besieged during its history, it belonged to various kingdoms before becoming part of Louis XIV's France.

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • The fleur-de-lys, the main symbol of Lille's coat of arms, is intrinsically linked to French royalty. Its presence indicates not only the city's historic allegiance to France, but also the recognition and protection granted by the King.
