History of the flag

Lithuania's current flag was adopted in 1918, before disappearing in 1940 after the country was annexed by the USSR.

The current national banner was reintroduced on Lithuania's independence in 1990.

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • Yellow evokes light, wheat fields, the country's generosity and wealth.

  • Green embodies forests, life and freedom.

  • Red symbolizes the blood shed in the fight against the invader.
