History of the flag

Following the Libyan Revolution of 2011 and the fall of Muammar Gaddafi's regime, the flag of Libya was changed from its original green color.

The flag of the Kingdom of Libya (1951-1969) was re-adopted.

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • The crescent moon and star embody Islam, the country's majority religion.

  • White-Black-Green-Red are the pan-Arab colors.

  • These are inspired by a line by Safiyeddine Al-Hali (14th century Arab poet): ‘White are our blessings, Black are our battles, Green are our pastures, Red are our swords’.
