History of the flag

Macau has been a Chinese Special Administrative Region since 1999, and its flag was designed by Xiao Hong, an art teacher.

Its many casinos make it the world's largest gambling zone, ahead of Las Vegas.

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • The five stars on the flag are a reference to the flag of China, with the largest star representing the Chinese Communist Party.

  • The lotus has been chosen as the region's floral emblem. The water and bridge below symbolize Macau's geographical position.
