History of the flag

First introduced in 1950, it initially consisted of 11 bands.

In 1963, 3 bands were added following the rallying of 3 territories, including Singapore, but the exclusion of the latter in 1965 did not change its appearance.

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • The crescent moon represents Islam, the star the unity of the federated states. Yellow is the royal colour.

  • Blue embodies the unity of the people of Malaysia.

  • Red is the color of bravery, white of purity. The 14 stripes represent the equal status of the 13 states.
