History of the flag

Malta gained its independence in 1964, after having been used as a strategic point by the British during the Second World War.

It became a republic in 1974, making it Europe's youngest microstate.

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • For the bombing and resistance of the Maltese people during the Second World War, King George VI of England awarded them the Cross of St. George, inscribed ‘For Gallantry’.

  • The white and red colors refer to the Order of Malta, a Catholic hospital association.
