History of the flag

The blue-yellow-red colors were inspired by the 1848 revolution.

The current flag was adopted in 1991, with the addition of the Moldovan coat of arms to distinguish it from the Romanian flag.

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • An eagle holds an olive branch (peace), a scepter (sovereignty) and an aurochs-headed shield from the Principality of Moldavia.

  • Blue embodies freedom and the emancipation of the people.

  • Golden yellow represents prosperity, equality and justice.

  • Red symbolizes blood and brotherhood.
