History of the flag

Adopted in 1992, the flag represents an ancestral Mongolian totem: the “Soyombo”, dating from the 17th century.

This totem symbolises, from top to bottom: fire, earth, water, sun, moon, yin and yang.

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • This totem conveys national values such as hope, Buddhism, fighting spirit, justice and honesty.

  • Red symbolises freedom and independence.

  • Blue is the traditional color of the Turko-Mongol peoples.
