History of the flag

Independent since 2006 following separation from Serbia, the flag is based on the colors of the Principality of Montenegro (1852-1910).

In the center is the coat of arms of King Nicolas the Ist.

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • The double-headed eagle embodies state power in harmony with the Church. The golden lion represents power and bravery.

  • Red and gold were the colors of the flag of the Principality of Montenegro.
