History of the flag

Namibia's flag dates from 1990. Before that, the flag used was that of SWAPO (Southwest Africa People's Organization) until 1975.

Note: Namibia was a former German protectorate from 1884 to 1915.

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • The twelve-rayed sun symbolizes the unity of Namibia's ethnic groups. Embodies the sky, the Atlantic and its resources, and the rare rains.

  • The white lines represent peace and unity.
