History of the flag

The French flag and the Kanak flag are to be flown together.

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • Established in 1794, it is the symbol of the French Republic.

  • The Kanak flag adopted in 1984 is the flag of the FLNKS (Kanak and Socialist National Liberation Front). Blue: for sky and sea. Red: for fire and blood. Green: represents the earth. Yellow: represents the Sun. The ridge arrow is the symbol of Kanak society.
