Nord-Pas-de-Calais has a flag similar to other flags of regions historically linked to the county of Flanders, such as the Flemish region of Belgium.

It is not uncommon to find different variants in use.

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • The origin of the lion flag is attributed to the Count of Flanders, Philippe d'Alsace, who, returning from a crusade in 1178, was attacked by the King of Albania, Nobilion, whom he killed and took his coat of arms to use as his own.

  • Golden yellow represents prosperity and greatness.
