History of the flag

The country is one of the successor states of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, from which it declared independence in 1991 under the name ‘Republic of Macedonia’.

Its flag was adopted in 1995, and the country was renamed ‘North Macedonia’ in 2018.

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • The sun represents Macedonian values such as light, happiness, life and freedom.

  • The vermilion red embodies the fight against slavery, the color of which was worn by the stallholders.
