History of the flag

Norway's flag reflects centuries of Danish domination.

It was adopted in 1821 and differs from the ‘Dannebrog’ (name of the Danish flag) by the addition of a blue cross, the color of freedom and democracy.

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • Symbol of Christianity, as in the Nordic tradition.

  • Red is the main color of Viking warriors.
