History of the flag

In 1970, after a coup d'État against his father, Crown Prince Qabus ibn Said brought modernisation to his country and changed its banner.

The national flag as we know it today was adopted on 25 April 1995.

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • Swords and the khanja, a traditional curved dagger, are the weapons that have helped the Omanis defend their territory.

  • Symbolizes prosperity, purity and peace.

  • Red symbolizes the glory and fighting spirit of the people.

  • Embodies the landforms of the country, in particular the Jebel Akhdar, as well as Islam.
