History of the flag

The Philippine flag was adopted in 1898, but was banned when the United States and then Japan took control of the country.

The national banner was reinstated in 1946 at the time of independence.

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • The 8 rays of the sun represent the provinces that rebelled against Spain in the XIXth century, and the stars represent the 3 main regions of the country, on a white background, symbolising freedom.

  • Blue symbolizes peace and truth.

  • Red embodies patriotism and courage.
