History of the flag
The flag is called ‘Mavéli’ in Creole, or ‘Radiant Volcano’.
It originated in the 1970s as a left-wing political movement.
What do the elements of the flag mean?
The color of the ocean, the sky and softness.
The rays of sunlight symbolize the populations that have come to settle Reunion over the centuries.
The triangle illustrates the Piton de la Fournaise. The red refers to the blood shed in memory of the abolition of slavery in Réunion in 1848.
