Rom Flag: Meaning and History

History of the flag

On April 8, 1971, the World Gypsy Congress in London gave birth to the International Romani Union, and thus to the Roma flag.

This congress marked the unity of this transnational people.

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • The red wheel is a tribute to the Roma's Indian origins.

  • Blue embodies the sky, freedom, spirituality and the values of the people.

  • Green evokes the earth, nature, fertility and the roads traveled by the Roma people.
