History of the flag

Inherited from the French flag, the Romanian flag originated in 1848.

The three colors were chosen to represent the alliance of the three great provinces against the Ottomans.

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • It is said that the three colors of the flag date back to the Romanian Cultural Revolution of 1821 and represent the emancipation of the people. Each color also represents one of the country's provinces: Wallachia (blue and yellow), Moldavia (blue and red), Transylvania (blue, yellow and red).
