History of the flag
The current Russian flag was adopted by decree in 1993.
Its origins date back to the reign of Tsar Peter the Great (1682-1725) : it was first flown in 1693 when the Tsar explored the White Sea in north-west Russia, and its colors are said to have been inspired by the flag of the Netherlands.
What do the elements of the flag mean?
Originally, white was the color of the Tsar. Today it embodies freedom and independence.
Blue is the color of the sky and of the Virgin Mother, protecting the Motherland.
Red symbolizes sovereignty and power.
