History of the flag

On the current flag, adopted in 2011, a crown embodying the republic caps the coat of arms of San Marino, the world's oldest republic (founded in 301).

The inscription ‘Libertas’ (Liberty) is engraved below the coat of arms.

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • Surrounded by laurel, a symbol of abundance, the three towers are those of Guaita, Cesta and Montale, built on the slopes of Mount Titano.

  • White is the color of peace, and represents the snows of Mount Titano, the local mountain.
