History of the flag

Based on the arms of the Counts of Savoy, the Savoyard flag is inspired by the arms of the Order of Malta, since the Savoyards saved the Order from Ottoman invasion in 1315.

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • The Savoy cross has been the emblem of the counts and dukes of Savoy since the XIVth century.

  • The red background is inherited from the banner of the Order of Malta.
