Slovenia Flag: Meaning and History

Embroidered flag patch — Slovenia

History of the flag

Adopted in 1991, the Slovenian flag pays tribute to the country's natural, cultural and historical origins.

It is based on the colors of the Yugoslav flag, itself inspired by the Russian flag.

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • The coat of arms refers to Mount Trigrav (‘Three Heads’). The blue lines illustrate the Save and Drav rivers, and the gold stars recall the arms of the Counts of Celje.

  • White is the color of power and justice.

  • Blue for nobility and hope.

  • Red embodies the people.
