History of the flag

Introduced at the end of apartheid in 1994, the South African flag is a lesson of humanity.

The large recumbent Y symbolizes peaceful assembly and convergence of the people.

What do the elements of the flag mean?

  • Black, yellow and green are the traditional colors of black African movements such as the ANC (Nelson Mandela's political party).

  • Red, blue and white are the colors of the Dutch whom arrived in Cape Town in the 17th century. More generally, the colors represent the population of Europe.
