History of the flag
These two islands off the coast of Venezuela, discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1498, have been united since 1899.
They were respectively conquered by the English and the Spanish before gaining independence in 1962, when the flag was officially adopted.
What do the elements of the flag mean?
Red represents the fervor of the people as well as the brightness of the sun.
White symbolizes the sea and the purity of the country's ideals, notably equality.
Black echoes the natural resources and the unity of the people.
